Creating a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere is not just an art – it is also the key to successful customer relationships. Whether you are a hairdresser, barber, masseur, or esthetician, your ability to converse with guests can prove to be one of the most important tools for your salon. But what to choose as the topic for a chat during service?
Topics related to the service (example for hairdressers)
How much time do you spend daily on styling your hair?
What is your daily hair care routine? (Maybe add a compliment before asking the question)
Do you think a short or long hairstyle suits you better?
Do you use natural or purchased hair masks? If so, how many times a week and which ones?
What is your usual daily style?
Which shampoo and hair conditioner do you use and why?
Have you ever performed any hair treatments? If so, which ones and why?
If not, do you plan to try any treatments?
Have you ever colored your hair? If so, in what color?
Are you planning to dye your hair soon?
Hobbies and passions
How do you spend your free time?
What interests you most passionately?
Do you play any musical instrument? If so, which one and why?
Do you like to travel? Where are you planning to go next time?
What would you recommend to a beach/mountain lover for a vacation?
Which are the latest TV shows or movies you compulsively watch?
What is your favorite movie of all time?
Do you take books? If so, what genre is your favorite?
Which is the last book you read?
Tip: Do not reveal spoilers and do not ruin the experience of watching the show/movie.
Events, sports and multimedia
Do you follow sports? If so, what is your favorite sport?
Will you watch the match in Stožice live?
Who do you think will win in…?
Who is your favorite athlete?
What are your plans for Christmas or Easter this year?
Whom will you haunt this Halloween?
What is your favorite song or band?
Work and ambitions
Do you have an office job or your own business?
Do you work in the area?
What does your company do?
What do you like best or least about your job?
What is your solution for relieving stress after a long day at work?
Your work sounds exciting. How did you come up with it?
Children and pets
Do you have any pets?
What breeds are there, how old are they, or what is your pet’s name?
How old are your children? (if you know they are)
What do you do as a family in your free time?
Which of the children is the most naughty? (if they have more than one)
How did you meet your husband?
Tips: If they recently lost a pet, express your sympathy and don't get too involved in it. You can also praise the children or pets if they show you a photo.
Other topics
Do you know this area/city well?
What are your plans for the weekend?
Are you traveling somewhere for the holidays?
What is your favorite food or dessert?
Which cafe/restaurant would you recommend for this weekend?
What is your dream holiday destination?
Which topics are better to avoid?
- Politics
There is a high probability that you will disagree, which is not good for business. In fact, it can quickly turn into an unpleasant situation. If your client has strong political views, try to remain neutral and politely redirect the topic.
- Religion
Another highly risky topic to avoid. Religion is personal and sensitive, and any discussion about it can quickly hurt feelings, including yours.
- Money
Perhaps your client is facing financially difficult times. The last thing you want to do is add further pressure on them with questions about salary or business profits. Also, do not answer questions about your own earnings.
